Police Regional Office in MIMAROPA under the stewardship of PCSUPT EMMANUEL LUIS D LICUP, Regional Director has registered a notable decrease of 48 or 24.24% rape incidents from 198 in January to July 2017 to 150 of the same period last year.

Based on the Statistics from the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division, rape is the second among the 8 index crimes in the region with 150 incidents. This represents 3.43% of the total crime volume of 4,367 crime incidents. 83 Incidents happened in rural areas and majority or 56% of the victims were minors with 85 cases. 53% of the offenders have the age of 31 and above.

Of the lower units, Mindoro Oriental Police Provincial Office under the leadership of PSSUPT CHRISTOPHER C BIRUNG, Provincial Director registered a decrease of rape cases with 22 or   32.84% from 67 to 45 incidents. The notable decrease was the result of the initiated project of Oriental Mindoro PPO when they created and launched their infomercial campaign on violence against women and children in cooperation with the local TV network in the province. Further, the active participation of the religious sectors and other organization strengthened the relationship of the community with God. Further, the continuous conduct of lectures and symposium changed the perception of the public in normative beliefs about sex and rape and it has contributed in the awareness campaign that rape is a serious crime and that the penalty is life imprisonment.

Mindoro Oriental is followed by Occidental Mindoro with the decreased of 8 incidents from 20 to 12 followed by Palawan and Puerto Princesa with 7 from 58 to 51 and 22 to 15 respectively, Marinduque with 5 from 156 to 11 and Romblon with 1 from 16 to 15.

The notable decrease of rape incidents in the region was attributed through the concerted efforts made by the PNP especially of the personnel of the Women and Children Protection Desk who are on their headway towards operations of this type of policing activities where their main concern is protecting the rights, morale and welfare of women and children in collaboration with the local government units and other concerned agencies to end rape and other buses/violence against women and children.

Meanwhile. PCSUPT LICUP encouraged the public to help support the PNP’s campaign to end violence against women and children especially the women to cooperate with the PNP by helping them stop the culture of silence on rape and others violence or abuses committed against them.
